Rotarian of the Month- Carol Lozano
Younger Years
I was born in Washington state. My father employment moved us to Anchorage Alaska when I was 6 months old. His job was unusual. Although he was employed by Philco he was considered to be in the military because he was part of designing and installing the nuclear sites Alaska. It was the first line of defense for the continental U.S.. There are many stories of sabotage by the USSR that would curl your toes.
Alaska was a wonderful place to grow up, but the isolation prompted me to move to Oklahoma after graduation from high school. In Oklahoma I attended University of Central Oklahoma. After eight years my parents moved to Houston Texas. I saw the light and moved to Gods country. It was in Houston I met and married Jerry. We have lived in Houston, San Antonio, Austin and final San Angelo.
It was in Austin at St. Edwards University I finished my degrees was ER Human Resources. Career My career ranged from cocktail server to front line manager for IBM. The jobs I enjoyed the most were jobs that involved developing people’s skills to their maximum potential. IBM was my most interesting job. It was a time of rapid change and growth similar to what the transiter did for the electronics industry. The first product I started with was DOS was based and I ended with Windows. The only internet access available was ERIC. AOL was only an email and internet access was via phone dialup. The access was charged by the minutes. At work you had ethernet which was much
faster because of the Novell network. We were excited when we issued our new 485 processor computers, a big upgrade from the 385 processor. Netscape was the new exciting program which gave us internet access. Then there were the exciting new products Palm Pilot and Black Berries. With the new access there was the crazy company who was selling books online. I saw the rise and fall of the dot.com companies. Phones equip with GPS and internet access to the rise, fall and resurrection of
Apple. The start of social media internet program MySpace and Facebook. Internet browsers by the name of Google, Bing, Foxfire and Yahoo.
Rotary
I love Rotary because of the service aspect. There is no group I have belong to which gives me the sense of purpose that Rotary has.
My husband joined NW Austin Rotary and that is when I was introduced to Rotary. I enjoyed the people I met through Rotary, but it wasn’t until I went to PETS training with my husband that I really understood what Rotary was about. The service above self became clear to me. It was there I found my true self. It was here I found out about the Adopt Festival. A passion was set on fire in me. If Rotary can end polio, what could we do for foster children to find a forever home. It was then I joined Rotary. At
this new club I started promoting an Adoption Match event. We hosted it for several years until the club dissolved. It was then my husband told me about a foster child speaker he had heard talking about a mentor who had helped her apply to get into college and navigate the winding trail involved in college. I think the Eclub would be a perfect platform to find mentors who would help high students in their junior
year to apply for college.
