Rotarian of the Month
Juanita R. Lira
I am proud to be a member of the E-club of Central Texas and happy to tell you about myself. I’m a retired educator having served as a teacher, supervisor, assistant principal, principal, director of elementary schools, Interim Superintendent at United ISD in Laredo and adjunct professor at Texas A&M International University.
My husband Juan and I got an invitation to join Rotary 15 years ago. This gave us an opportunity to give back to the community. The president of The Laredo Rotary Club at that time asked us to write a grant for an international project. Juan and I wrote a grant for $20,000 for library books for an elementary school in Nuevo Laredo. Since then, we’ve been writing international grants every year. All the projects have been in schools in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas Mexico and include libraries, computer laboratories, laptops, mini splits, and instructional materials.
As a Rotarian, I’ve had the privilege of serving as secretary, board member, chair of numerous committees and President of The Laredo Rotary Club. At the district level, I also served as a member of the Membership Team. When Betty Ramirez Lara was Governor of District 5930, I organized the Satellite Club of Laredo Evening with over 30 members. I’m totally committed to “service above self”.
