Bat Cruise on Sept. 30, 2021
The new Four Way Test Speech Contest Committee has exciting plans for the Rotary E-Club of Central Texas.  The contest will have money prizes in the amount of $100, $200 and $500 for students speaking on zoom about how the ethics of the Four Way Test made a difference in their lives.  High school students in the Austin area as well as international high school students may participate.   In order to fund those prizes plans are being made to  have a bat cruise as a fundraiser.  Tickets will include seeing the bats on a boat, food and a Mystery Raffle.  Every member is asked to donate a wrapped gift for the Mystery Raffle. Raffle tickets will be sold on the boat. A Happy Hour close by is being planned before the boat ride.
We are seeking sponsors to cover some of the cost and so far we have the 9E Ranch Cabins Lost Pines Bastrop and Utilities Services Experts (owned by Betty and Adam Lara)
Green Steps
Supporting the environment, Rotary's 7th area of focus, is what Green Steps is all about.  The new committee of the Rotary E-Club which every member is part will give the club service projects around environmental issues each month.  Yes, it is huge and diverse so one step at time beginning with awareness knowledge.  The Green Steps committee will meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30.  Our club members live in many different areas so individually we will do service around supporting the environment together.
This month members Green Steps Service is take a reusable water bottle, cup and bag with you everywhere in order to reduce landfill material.  Below is a look at what we throw away.
The Green Step for the Month of July is looking at how we can reduce Landfill.  The three main problems with landfill are toxins, leachate and greenhouse gases.
Organic materials such a food scraps and yard waste are usually compacted when they are put into a landfill.  This removes oxygen and causes the material to break down anaerobically. Over time the process will produce methane:a type of greenhouse gas that is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and wreaks havoc on our environment. billion pounds of CO2e equal to what 366,284 cars produce.
Each year 54 billion paper cups, 38 billion plastic cups and 26 billion plastic cups are thrown away which prod
uce 4 billion pounds of CO2e equal to what 366,284 cars produce.
Service challenge #1 is bring your own cup, carry a water bottle and your own reusable grocery bag.

Better Friendship
One of the challenges of an E-Club and of the pandemic is building better friendships.  So the goal of Rotarian of the Month is to know each other better.   When you are named please forward me a picture and lots of information about you- like where you grew up, family, schools, career, hobies, Rotary service.  We want to get to know each other.  We would also like for you to do a "classification talk" at our monthly zoom meeting.  Let's keep working towards getting to know each other better.
