The Green Step for the Month of July is looking at how we can reduce Landfill. The three main problems with landfill are toxins, leachate and greenhouse gases. Organic materials such a food scraps and yard waste are usually compacted when they are put into a landfill. This removes oxygen and causes the material to break down anaerobically. Over time the process will produce methane:a type of greenhouse gas that is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and wreaks havoc on our environment. billion pounds of CO2e equal to what 366,284 cars produce. Each year 54 billion paper cups, 38 billion plastic cups and 26 billion plastic cups are thrown away which prod uce 4 billion pounds of CO2e equal to what 366,284 cars produce. Service challenge #1 is bring your own cup, carry a water bottle and your own reusable grocery bag.
