Being selected as Rotarian of The Month is a great opportunity for me to share my story. It started on September 8 th in Seattle, Washington. My dad was an Urban Planner and had a wandering spirit. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest, Arizona, Upstate New York, Bay Area of California, back to Washington and finally to East Texas. Talk about culture shock! I went to three high schools in four years spending my Senior year in tiny Westwood High School in Palestine, Texas. I got out of there on the first bus and went to college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. After earning a BBA, I worked in Retail Management for a while. I wasn’t satisfied with the business world and decided to return to school.  But before I finish my career story, the best part of my story needs to be shared! When I was in college, I was a member of Circle K International, which is a service and leadership organization affiliated with Kiwanis. I met Frank on a bus ride from Dallas to Milwaukee on the way to a convention. Service has been part of our relationship since college. We have been married for 34 years and have two children. Tyler is 28 and works as a delivery driver for Freytag Florist. Haley is 26 and lives in Kennesaw, GA, which is too far away for me! She was a company member of the Georgia Ballet for five years before COVID shut down all the performances. She is now working at a Tile Company, teaching dance at a private studio and returning to school to finish her degree. She is one talented determined young lady.
After Frank and I got married, I went to graduate school and earned a Masters of Special Education. I taught in public education for 28 years. Mostly Elementary Reading and Special Education but ended my career with a classroom of energetic first graders. When I retired almost 4 years ago, I started my own private tutoring business. Ivy League Services has been keeping me busy during the pandemic.
In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking, travel, watching movies, plays, football, baseball and trying out new restaurants and bakeries. I have a huge sweet tooth! During the lockdown when I was stuck at home I needed a new hobby. I found a pen pal group on Facebook and jumped in pen first. I absolutely love it. I love meeting new people, in person or at the mailbox. Now that I am a Rotarian, a whole new world of friendships await.  I’ll meet you for a cup of tea and a pastry or a burger.  Just give me a call!

It's time to turn your Lights Out!
Most North American migratory birds fly at night, and city lights can disorient birds on their paths, resulting in fatal collisions. The Upper Texas Coast is an important migratory path for birds, and they depend on us to provide safe passage through the Houston-Galveston area. Throughout migration, and particularly during storm fronts, turning Lights Out for Birds can make a big impact on their survival.
We encourage businesses, buildings, and individuals across the state to turn off all nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. throughout spring migration.

Spring Migration: March 1 - June 15 | Peak period: April 23 - May 10

A letter from Shelter Box
Good morning, Joan & Kent,

I am writing to provide a new update to our ShelterBox response information which I have just received a few hours ago:

We have confirmed that we will be responding to the Ukraine Crisis based on our needs assessment and likely locations include Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Slovakia or Hungary. Although we are still determining which aid items will be most needed, it is inevitable that our aid will be needed and we are committed to supporting those affected by the crisis. We are currently meeting with other organizations to ensure our efforts are coordinated and aligned in proper regions.

Kent messaged on Facebook asking if we had delivered any aid to the region yet – the answer right now is no. We have a team on the ground coordinating with other humanitarian actors and we will be sending aid.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. If I don’t have the answers I will seek them out.

I will continue to keep you up to date.

Thank you for all you do to support our work.

With gratitude,
Jessica

Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing Ukraine – and they urgently need help.

Dear Rotary E-Club of Central Texas,

Right now, the world is witnessing a vast and devastating humanitarian crisis unfold in Ukraine. At ShelterBox, we are deeply concerned for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing their homes on foot in below-freezing temperatures.

I am writing to inform you, our most valued supporters, that ShelterBox is responding to the Ukraine crisis.

We are deploying a team of highly trained operations and response team members to the region to carry out assessments. In coordination with local authorities and other aid agencies, our team will work to understand the type of emergency shelter the displaced people of Ukraine need and if our aid will be suitable. You can read full details of the crisis and our response in the emergency brief below.

ShelterBox has deployed to the region before and has experience working in Ukraine in response to flooding in 2003 and 2008 as well as carrying out assessments in 2014 following the outbreak of the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region.

We stand with the UN in calling for peace and the protection of civilians affected by the crisis, and we are committed to supporting families affected by the Ukraine crisis.

If you can, please support this life-saving work. Your gift can provide emergency aid and supplies to families affected by the Ukraine crisis and disasters around the world.

Thank you for your continued support of ShelterBox.

With gratitude,

Kerri Murray

President, ShelterBox USA

Green Steps for Rotarians' Service
Green Steps  provides service opportunities through supporting the environment, the newest area of focus in Rotary.  Green Steps is how members of Rotary E-Club of Central Texas does service together while being apart.  We can each do our part and that is our service.
Green Step #1 is reducing plastic by taking reusable  water bottle and bag with you.
Green Step #2 Meatless Monday focus is on the impact of meat production on the environment.
Green Step #3 Plant Pollinator Plants. By replacing grass you don't have to mow, water, fertilize, or use pesticides and that is good for  bees!
Green Step  #4 Mindful Mowing (wait until wildflowers go to seed.
Green Step #5 Leave the Leaves on the ground.
Green Step #6 Respect, Reverence, Respect in Relationship to Mother Earth by walking softly, leave no trace, feast responsibility, look to the Seventh Generation.
Step #7 Plant a Tree.
Step #8 Lunch Local for Love (shop local farmer's markets)
Step #8- Be kind to bees !
Green Steps is how Rotary e Club of Central Texas does service individually since  members live apart so we can all make a difference  together.
Better Friendship
One of the challenges of an E-Club and of the pandemic is building better friendships.  So the goal of Rotarian of the Month is to know each other better.   When you are named please forward me a picture and lots of information about you- like where you grew up, family, schools, career, hobies, Rotary service.  We want to get to know each other.  We would also like for you to do a "classification talk" at our monthly zoom meeting.  Let's keep working towards getting to know each other better.
